Mental Illness

A local newspaper has been running a campaign against individual gun ownership.  One of their major complaints is that guns are used in suicides.  While it is true that many guns are used in suicides in the United States.

Still the suicide rate in Japan is much higher than it is in the United States and personal firearms ownership is almost unheard of there.  The same newspaper was campaigning in favor of the assisted suicide law in California.  They favor suicide, but only if it's not done with a gun, apparently.

The United States does a very poor job of dealing with mentally ill people.  We don't spend enough money to keep them in the hospital while they are still a danger to themselves or other people.  We don't treat them effectively, and we don't have surgeries or medications that work well.  We need better laws, more research, better training to aid the mentally ill; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
