Christopher Columbus

Many people today like to revise history and pretend as if our national heroes have to be perfect in order to be honored.  We honor national heroes because they did something that other people at the time did not do, or did not do as well.

Native Americans practiced slavery too. Creek Indians owned slaves and fought for the Confederacy. We all all people of our time. We remember Christopher Columbus for his vision of sailing around the world and the example of being unafraid to follow your vision where others have never gone.

We don't look to him for moral guidance.  Christopher Columbus was a man of his times in most ways.  He did what most men of his time did, except he had a vision of sailing around the world.  No other man did that in those days, and for that we honor him; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
