I work part time as a police officer and have for over twenty years.  If you are stopped by the police, this is what you do and everything should turn out just fine.  It's not difficult and you will save yourself a lot of trouble.  

Don't say anything except answer direct questions from the police.  Hand them your drivers license, registration, and proof of insurance.  Stay in the car and stay still unless they ask you to exit.  Don't ask them to explain or argue, you are unlikely to win in the field.  Sign the ticket. 

 If you don't like what happened, phone the station and complain to the watch commander.  If you think the ticket was inappropriate, go to court and explain to the judge why you are not guilty.  Follow those few steps and situations like this will never happen; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
