Highway Construction

I often drive 50 miles into Los Angeles County.  It takes as long as three hours.  It's all freeway miles.  It should take less than 50 minutes to go that far at 65 miles per hour.  The roadways are paid for out of gasoline taxes.  California has some of the highest gasoline taxes in the nation.

Our gasoline also is subject to sales taxes so that as the price of gasoline goes up, the taxes increase too.  So the state has collected more and more money for roads in the last ten years.  Yet, despite this the state has done a poor job of improving our existing roadway and of building new roadways.  In the last 30 years

California's population has doubled, yet we never finished even half of the projected freeway system.  California is becoming a failed state in terms of transportation; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
