DARPA is the government organization that does and sponsors research for the US military.  One of their biggest projects now is robots.  They want to make robots to carry loads, rather than have soldiers carry them.

Soldiers today often carry loads of fifty, to eighty pounds.  The helmet, body armor, ammunition, water, and weapons are heavy just on their own.  If a patrol is going to last for a couple days, particularly in extreme weather, there is a lot of extra gear that is needed.

In the desert it can take a lot of water to survive running around outside.  Water is heavy, one pint is one pound.  Robots will be a great option to replace individuals carrying loads for soldiers.  I think that robots in the private sector will also be an important commercial product too; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
