Friends and Allies

People have friends. Nations have allies. Britain and the USA are allies with a special relationship. But how many troops did Britain send to Vietnam and how many troops did the USA send to Northern Ireland? Friends may sacrifice for each other, but nations operate in their own best interest.

Nations often have parallel interests. The Soviet Union and the US vs Nazi Germany. The Soviet Union was not our friend, but they were our ally against Germany. Just as today the Russians and the USA have a common enemy of radical Islam, but we differ on Ukraine and Syria. Sometimes we work together and sometimes we don't.

Sometimes individuals who trust one another, and are friends may also control entire nations.  President Reagan was friends with Margaret Thacher.   I am sure that meant the US worked more closely with Britain than we otherwise would have to win the Cold War.  Still, each nation must do what is best for it at the time; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
