Background Checks

If I thought that background checks really made any difference I might favor them, but they don't matter. Guns are low technology. In California we have a ban on certain rifles. One man made his own at home and went on a killing spree. How did that background check work out?

What other constitutional rights do you think should require governmental approval before you exercise them? Should ownership of a printing press require a background check? How about abortion? Should that require a background check?

What happens when the background check costs $10,000? In Orange County where I live the background check for a concealed weapons permit is several hundred dollars, and is non-refundable. Most permits are not granted. So a single mom, working late at night at a restaurant can't afford to apply for a permit because it costs too much. Her ex-husband, stalker won't be bothered by that law; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
