Accidental Deaths of Children

When a child is accidentally killed with a firearm it's national news.  Certainly the death of a child is a terrible tragedy.  If there is a major cause of death for children we need to be aware of it and prevent those deaths.  Accidental firearms deaths are at their lowest level in over 100 years.

There are several accidental causes of death for children that are much more common for children.  Children are 18 times more likely to drown than to be killed by an accidental gunshot.  They are 22 times more likely to suffocate than to be killed by an accidental gunshot.

Yet we almost never hear about children who drown in the family swimming pool.  Having a swimming pool is much more dangerous than having a gun in the house.  Black children are even more likely to die of drowning than white children.  If we care about the children, if we want to relieve the suffering of minorities, then think more about swimming pool safety rather than gun safety; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
