ATM Fix Everything
This video is an excellent fifteen minute presentation showing that more mass automation is inevitable in blue collar and white collar jobs. As computers get smarter, and cheaper, and as people become more willing to accept dealing with machine rather than other people, more jobs will be lost to automation and robotics.
I remember the days before the ATM machine. You had to go visit the bank in person for every transaction. The bank was only open from about 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. most days of the week. They stayed open late, to 6:00 p.m. on Friday when people could cash their paychecks. There was no automatic deposit of checks, everyone got a physical check. There was no Saturday banking.
Eventually they developed computers that would permit your check to be deposited electronically and so you did not have to go to the bank to cash your paycheck. They developed ATM machines that allowed 24/7 banking. At first the ATM machines were only at the bank, but now they are all over the place and with Internet banking you can bank with your telephone. Look for many other jobs to be taken away by machines in the future; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
