Local Control of the Police

Police work is a local function.  Police work should be paid for out of local money.  If there is a need for more money, the county or even the state can pick up the tab.  The Federal government should not pay for local law enforcement.

They should not pay for officer salaries, and facilities, or much of anything else.  I can understand that they can pay for some training or can provide surplus equipment, but the day to day expenses of running a police department should be paid for by the local people.

Police should perform in a manner consistent with the law and the desires of the local population, as expressed through their local elected officials.  If a local city wants to have a harsh enforcement of the law, that should be their choice.  If a local city wants a police department that is more easygoing or provides greater discretion on the manner of handling local crime, that should be their choice.  They local city should determine who they want to hire, how they want to promote, or any other functions of running the department.  It's not the job of the Federal government to second guess their decisions; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
