Ferguson, MO

A police officer shot and killed a young criminal in Ferguson, MO.  President Obama spoke out about it and was not very supportive of the police.  In fact, whenever he speaks out about the police he at best sends a mixed message.

You are either with us or with the criminals.  The police are the arm of the government that keeps order and enforces the law.  Those duties are not always popular, even with decent honest citizens.  Often they look bad in photos, on video and in person.  Still, looking bad is not the same as being bad.  The video often starts after the criminals have been stopped from their criminal act and are being taken into custody.  The news headline often omits important factors.

Elected officials have a duty to support the people.  They have a duty to help maintain the social order.  Mayors, governors, and the President need to keep their mouth shut or speak only in generalities until they learn the facts.  They need to speak to keep the people calm and not inflame them.  The police are specially screened and hired and trained to provide public service.  Those few who break the law, desecrate the badge and spoil their oath and deserve to be punished.  The vast majority deserve the benefit of the doubt, they are putting their lives on the line every day; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
