The rioting in Ferguson, MO is a perfect example of public safety failing to maintain the safety of the public. People have a right to protest. They have a right to march, to carry signs, to shout slogans. They don't have a right to break into stores, steal peoples stuff and burn down buildings.
After the first night of rioting the police should have responded hundreds of police to prevent any opportunity for rioting a second night. A massive show of force will show the hooligans that rioting is not an acceptable behavior.
The police don't have to be deployed right in front of the demonstrators. They can be deployed even blocks away. They need to be set up in the areas where the looting is likely to happen. They need to be set up so that the violence can be contained. They should not be set up to inflame otherwise non-violent people into violence, but those who commit violence need to go tot jail; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
