Criminal Behavior

I hear and read about crime and sometimes people seem to get confused about who is responsible for the criminal behavior.  Someone robs a store and people try and explain it away by saying the robber was poor or disadvantaged in some way.

The robber gets in a shootout with police and perhaps an innocent bystander gets hit, even killed by gunfire; perhaps from the robber, perhaps from the police.  People seem to want to blame the police in many of these instances.  The person who instigates the criminal behavior is responsible for all that flows from their crimes.

The responsibility for crime always rests with the criminal.  The victim, however, can take responsibility for their behavior.  Just as you don't go to the ATM, withdraw money and wave it around does not make you responsible for being robbed, it is a foolish thing to do.  Just as a young woman going to a party and getting so drunk she passes out on the floor is being foolish. The robbery victim and rape victim are still victims, despite their foolish behavior; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
