I am not Roman Catholic and I never have been.  A few important points:
Out of over 110,000 priests in the USA from 1950 and 1992 there were 4% accused of sexual misconduct. Half of those reports were made after 2002. Many of those reports were decades old and often involved priests who were deceased. How do you legitimately investigate a sex crime that happened 20 or 30 years ago, especially when the suspect is dead? 149 priests were responsible for one third of the total number of cases.
Teachers are believed to molest children at the same or even higher rate than Catholic clergy. Other denominations handle the problem in a variety of ways and with over 10,000 denominations in the US I think it is difficult to say that they all do a better job of policing their own than the Roman Catholic Church. This article seems more interested in bashing the RCC in general and claiming that members of the RCC are not good Christians rather than providing the truth about a terrible scandal in the church.
The Roman Catholic Church historically did a poor job of internal policing this sex scandal. They have improved, but like any large organization they will have problems as long as they recruit from mankind. What large police agency has not had scandals with their Explorer scouts? How many have disbanded their Explorer scout programs after the teenage girls were molested by cops? Many agencies now require female police officers as part of the Explorer scout program and other precautions that we did not take 20 or 30 years ago.
Most responsible organizations have learned from these scandals and instituted new procedures and background checks that no one did 20 or 30 years ago. Anyone responsible for molesting a child belongs in prison for a very long time. I even support the death penalty for those with multiple convictions, knowing they will never stop molesting children and the devastating impact these crimes have on the victim. I do think we need to stop pointing the finger at the RCC as if they were a special case, they are not.
The liberal media simply likes to bash the RCC because of their opposition to homosexual marriage and to abortion. So anytime they get a story that makes the RCC look bad they run with it. In Mark 9:40 Jesus says, "For he who is not against us is for us." I believe the RCC is a legitimate Christian church. It is secular humanism, radical Islam and our own lack of Christian charity and unity we must fight; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
