NRA

Join the NRA. They do a lot. They lobby all over the nation to prevent bad bills from being signed into law. With millions of members it is difficult for the anti-gun people to ignore them. The NRA also works with manufacturers, police and others to provide technical information about ammo and guns. They also operate an extensive and excellent firearms museum. They sometimes get involved in lawsuits. They provide insurance for both theft of guns and liability. They provide public information through their web sites and magazines and book publishing. They run shooting competitions all over the country. They are the largest organization training police in firearms proficiency in the nation. They do a lot, but they can't do everything and be everywhere. They have a lot of money but they are not a bottomless pit of money either.
Next join your state affiliate organization of the NRA. That's the California Rifle and Pistol Association in California. They do the same sort of thing the NRA does but at the state level. They can focus only on your local state. I know the CRPA publishes a pamphlet about California guns laws every year. They lobby the state legislature and the Dept. of Fish and Game all the time on gun and hunting issues. They do a great job too, but can't do it all.
Then join other more focused groups like Gun Owners of America. These groups tend to be very active politically and also in lawsuits for pro-second amendment issues. What they do is very important and often work in conjunction with the State organization or NRA if they have a case with merit.  The NRA and State organizations tend to be more conservative and take a long term and big picture point of view. NRA has been around about 150 years, most of these other groups a lot less.  I am a life member of the NRA and CRPA. I encourage you all to join at least three gun related groups; that's the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
