The United States stands firmly with our Allies the Government of Egypt. The United States stands firmly with our friends the People of Egypt. Our wish is for freedom and stability. As the Government transitions to a freer and open type of government we want to help the Government of Egypt make that transition. We want to assist in any way that we can to insure the transition of power is peaceful and orderly. We want for the people of Egypt the same thing that all people deserve freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, a free market economy and a government that lives in peace with its neighbors and preserves the rights of its entire people.
A Taliban style government in Egypt would be a disaster for Egypt and a disaster for the world. The Christian minority there is ten percent of the population. The antiquities of ancient Egypt are part of the common heritage of all mankind. A radial Islamist government would likely move to destroy them both. The United States needs to be on the right side of history and not support dictators if there is a free and democratic option. It appears that in Egypt there may be a chance for a democratic government to take over from the dictatorship that has run the country for the past thirty years.
The United States should do all it can to thwart the radical Muslims from taking power in Egypt. The US should work with democratic leaders and the existing government to coordinate free and open elections that will preserve the rights of minorities, women and Christians in particular so that the people can finally enjoy the freedom they deserve. One of the problems with our war in Iraq and Afghanistan is our failure to insist on religious freedom for those people so we now have two Islamic republics rather than true democracies. We should not make that mistake again; that’s the view from the Hysterical Right Wing.
